Abstract

Objective: synthesize the evidence available in the scientific literature regarding the use of complementary therapies for the care of patients with breast cancer.
Methodology: a critical review was made of scientific literature available in PubMed (NCBI), Cochrane Library, Springer Link and Scielo, Jane's and BVS databases, using the descriptors complementary therapies, breast cancer and patient care, considering articles less than five years old, in Spanish, English and Portuguese, including quantitative, qualitative and mixed studies.
Results: 678 articles were found, 13 were included for analysis. The results were classified according to the complementary therapy applied to the care of breast cancer patients, such as: Qigong, Music Therapy, Dance Therapy, Guided Visualization, Mantra Meditation, Acupuncture, Mindfulness, Yoga and Tai Chi Chuan. Complementary therapies are very useful, the main benefits demonstrated are: reduction of post-surgical pain, depression, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, anger, stress and cognitive impairment; control of body weight; reduction of the presence of cytokines associated with obesity and inflammation; improvement of disease coping, mood, motivation and quality of life.
Conclusions: complementary therapies are strategies that Nursing can apply as care for breast cancer patients, since they produce positive physical, psychological, social and spiritual effects, do not require high costs, and patients collaborate by feeling useful and committed to the medical treatment, helping to achieve improvement in their state of health.
